From the day it opened in 1984, the distinctive 57-story granite building at 950 N. Michigan Ave. has been known as One Mag Mile simply because it is at the inside corner of Chicago’s Gold Coast – where Lake Shore Drive turns east and the city’s world-class shopping and hotel district – The Magnificent Mile – begins.

Its unique design faces Oak Street Beach. Designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, fashion retailers and upscale businesses occupy the lower floors while its 181 exclusive residences (including some of the city’s most dramatic penthouses and duplexes) are accessed through one of only a handful of buildings having a Michigan Avenue entrance. Since the beginning, John Robert Wiltgen Design has created numerous homes at this location. One of our clients, who has lived there for some time is now moving to a warmer climate, therefore her home is for sale.

It is an 1860 square foot two bedroom residence with two and one half baths. We renovated this home when the owner purchased it. There are Brazilian Cherry hardwood floors throughout and a beautiful millwork package that includes all new doors, door casings, baseboards, crown moldings, columns and pilasters. I call its style “Modern Vintage” inspired by historic East Lake Shore Drive but with larger windows and great amenities.

Doric style pilasters were added in strategic locations throughout the condominiums residence. In one place a full column hides telephone wires that rise through a stack of the building’s residences.

The large scale living room is quite gracious.  It provides stunning views of the Palmolive Building and Drake Hotel.

If someone is looking for a more contemporary interior design we created this  concept illustrating how the moldings and pilasters could be worked into a totally different look. Of course, there are many ways this interior could be modified.

The dining room overlooks Oak Street Beach and Lake Michigan. It is like being on a luxury cruise ship.

We gutted the kitchen and opened it up to the spacious dining room. The counter tops are Imperial Red Granite. Now it feels twice the size.

The master bedroom suite includes a gracious entry vestibule, a master bath a la the Beverly Hills Hotel, and a large walk-in closet.

We discovered an antique cabinet and transformed it into the master bath’s vanity.

Mere steps from shopping on Oak Street and down Michigan Avenue – it is certainly easy enough to run over to Tom Ford, Chanel, Luis Vuitton, Burdi or the newly opened Versace. Residents have access to luxury amenities that include an indoor pool and whirlpool, sundecks, fitness center and 24-hour door service. Generous floor plans showcase the city’s extraordinary views making these condos ideal for those looking to live in style.
